5 paragraph essay is very common assignment starting right from elementary or primary sections to middle school, high school till college and university levels. In this format essay writing will involve forming five paragraphs – an introductory paragraph, three body paragraphs that will give details of the topic and a concluding paragraph. This form of structure also lends the name ‘three tier essay’ or a ‘hamburger essay’. A newer version called the ‘painted essay’ based on this version has recently come up for elementary school children and consists of color and oral practice and is activity filled to train small boys and girls on how to write essays.

This essay style is also applied to speech making form of writing. In fact a 5 paragraph essay format is more or less an universal pattern followed and favored by most teachers for a majority of essay writing assignments. The introduction also known as a ‘narrative hook’ consists of an attractive first line that gets the attention of the reader. It will then present an introduction to the topic and briefly give the main terms and definitions related to the issue. The problem that the writer wants to highlight on, must be presented here.The introduction should be so presented that the reader understands at once the main focus of the topic. This paragraph will have a thesis statement at the end. The body will give the details of the topic and examine the main arguments from all angles while giving evidences for all presented arguments. It will try to support the thesis statement presented in the introduction along with arguments evidences. This para will also present those arguments which are against the writer’s stand, and he will have to refute these claims again by giving well placed and logical arguments. The conclusion will wind up the whole essay by reinstating the thesis statement and by brushing up the main important points.
