An Inspector Calls Essay
Creating Drama In An Inspector Calls Essay

An inspector calls essay, based on the play written by J. B. Priestley, is one of the most famous literary works of its time. It was part of the English literature GCSE syllabus for a long time and exposes the hypocrisies of the Victorian lifestyle in English society. The story is based on the lives of people living in the Birling household. The play is set in 1912 just before World War I broke out. Aurthur Birling is a wealthy politician and mill owner who hosts a dinner party to celebrate the engagement of his daughter Sheila to Gerald Croft, son of a competitor. Aurthur sees his daughter’s wedding as one of convenience. He feels it necessary to counsel his daughter and Gerald and does not miss the chance to discreetly spread the news to the Croft family that he is to be knighted soon.

The fun and frolic is interrupted as Inspector Goole comes to the Birling home investigating the death of a young woman, Eva Smith also known as Daisy Renton, who claimed in her diary that members of the Birling family were responsible for her death. Inspector Goole first shows Aurthur a photograph of Eva and on prodding him learns that Aurthur had terminated her employment in his mill when he learned she was supporting a strike for higher wages. Sheila also acknowledges that Eve had served her in a departmental store and was responsible for her sacking. Both her father and she were responsible for Eva losing her job for no fault of her own. Inspector Calls essays must highlight the callousness of both Sheila and Aurthur.

When Inspector Goole reveals that Eva was also known as Daisy, Gerald is startled and is forced to own up that he was attracted to Eva and kept her is his friend’s home for several months before asking her to leave and fend for herself. Aurthur’s wife, Sybil, heads a women’s charity but is not willing to help Eva who was pregnant. Sybil reasons that Eva was making up a story to gain favors. An Inspector Calls essay can demonstrate the lack of sympathy among the rich and the artificial world they lived in. When Sybil refuses to accept her part in Eva’s tragedy, Inspector Goole makes her accept that a public apology from the father of the child was in order.

Eric is the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle. He breaks down and accepts that he was responsible for raping Eva and even offered her £50 pounds. Inspector Goole had successfully charged all members of the Birling family and Gerald with the death of Eva. He leaves the scene making all of them feel guilty. Their superficial lifestyle prevents them from accepting blame for too long and later find out there is no Inspector Goole posted at the local police station. Initially, there is no death reported at the infirmary. The situation changes drastically when news comes in that a death due to consumption of disinfectant was reported. Inspector Calls essays must highlight the fact that crime does not pay. People must realize they have to have compassion for other people as well.
