Thanksgiving is a North American holiday celebrating or giving thanks during the season. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in the U.S.A and the second Monday of October in Canada. The Thanksgiving weekend is usually a four or five day weekend. Workers are given these days of but are still paid for them. The day after Thanksgiving which is known as Black Friday is a day in which people go out to retail stores and find sales for the Christmas season.
There are many truths about Thanksgiving. It is known that Thanksgiving is a harvest festival. The Pilgrims Thanksgiving was based off of a letter by Edward Winslow who was a Plymouth Colonists. The Pilgrim colonists was part of a stock company that was to return to England to profit from it. Pilgrims were able to survive for the winter because of guidance of the Natives. Also a British settler and slave named Squanto helped the Pilgrims grow and catch food. Without him they wouldn’t have been able to survive. One of the truths about Thanksgiving is that Pilgrims were not just here for peaceful resentment but for the profit of money in England. This was the reason that the Pilgrims came to Native American land.
The first Thanksgiving was said to have happened in 1619 with the “Berkeley Hundred in Virginia”. The group gave the day as “a day of Thanksgiving to God”. Around this time was the Indian Massacre of 1622. Nine settlers of Berkeley Hundred were killed along with about third of the Virginia colony population. The site of the Berkeley Hundred became Berkeley Plantation, which was the home of the Harrison Family. This was one of the first families of Virginia. These killings were related to the first settlement of the colony of Virginia.
